MARLEE’S GARDEN

PROFILE

I want to work at the garden because: I like gardening and I also wanted to meet and work with new people.

Two of my personal goals for working at the Dallas Youth Garden this summer are:

  1. Finding other ways to improve my gardening skills.

  2. Improving my social skills through the team gardening.

Two things I hope to learn from working at the Dallas Youth Garden are:

  1. What plants work best or struggle growing close to each other.

  2. Learning more about what plants I enjoy gardening.

I think my biggest challenge will be: weeding around the crops and vegetables, especially the squashes and beans.

My favorite vegetable or fruit is: My favorite vegetable is carrots.

I hope to contribute this to the garden this year: hard work, creative solutions, and a welcoming environment.

The difference between sugar pumpkins and regular jack o lantern pumpkins.

GARDEN PROJECTS

1.Project One

Question/Problem(s) Proposed: what are cucumber bugs?

Answer(s) I found: the cucumber bug/beetle, has two species. The spotted cucumber beetle and the striped cucumber beetles. spotted cucumber beetles are found more south while striped cucumber beetles are found further north. Cucumber bugs mainly feed on the leaves of the plants, and can sometimes kill the roots as well.

2. Recipe

Name: Barbecued squash

Vegetable Used: zucchini

Ingredients: garlic powder, pepper, salt, and onion powder.

Steps to Make it:

  1. Cut the zucchini longways in thick strips

  2. Season and toss the zucchini in a medium or large bowl

  3. Wrap the zucchini in foil or place directly on grill

  4. Wait till soft- you can take a fork and it will go through with minimal effort snd not get stuck

  5. Serve on platter or plate to let cool down, finished!

Opinion: delicious, not too crunchy and the seasonings added a nice flavor

3. Another Project

Name: toasted tomato bagel

Vegetable Used: tomato

Ingredients: tomatoes, avocado, bagel, and cream cheese or hummus.

Steps to Make it:

  1. Cut the bagel in half and put it face down (flat side down) in the heated oven.

  2. While bagel is being toasted, cut slices of avocado and tomato.

  3. Take out the toasted bagel, and grab the hummus or cream cheese and spread it on the bagel.

  4. Lay the sliced tomato and avocado on the bagel

  5. Enjoy!

Opinion: the texture from the toasted bagel, and the contrast with the fruit makes it a really interesting dish. Both the humid or cream cheese add a nice touch of flavor, and the moisture of the tomato evens out the crunch of the bagel
